SUMMARY
The assistant actuary is responsible for ensuring that best practices are followed and corrected as appropriate. The assistant actuary will communicate and/or deliver technical results of the actuarial work product to the Company and possibly other audiences for whom the results are relevant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each essential function satisfactorily.
- Participate in the delivery of actuarial consulting projects
- Review raw data files in spreadsheets and similar formats for completeness, consistency and accuracy
- Summarize detailed data to the level needed for input into actuarial models
- Organize and input data accurately into actuarial models; modify existing and create new actuarial models and/or create new code for unique data processing or changing predictive modeling assumptions demonstrating innovation and process improvement with minimum direction from a project manager or account executive
- Complete technical review of data input into actuarial models; review actuarial models and/or data processing and predictive modeling code for technical accuracy
- Recommend initial judgmental selections when appropriate
- Format work correctly and professionally; ensure that work product is complete, correct, and consistent
- Collaborate with consultants to complete assigned tasks
- Prepare client ready exhibits
- Effectively communicate with project teams and manage projects to ensure that projects are on time and meet Company standards for excellence
- Communicate clearly with coworkers and supervisors regarding day-to-day projects; effectively communicating while mentoring others
- Suggest improvements to accuracy, efficiency, and/or quality of Company processes or work products to supervisor
- Handle and process confidential information with complete discretion
COMPETENCIES
- Strong analytical and mathematical abilities
- Microsoft Office software (very strong MS Excel and good MS Access knowledge)
- Additional software knowledge that are helpful:
- Python, R, SAS, or similar
- Apply actuarial techniques appropriately
- Attention to detail and commitment to task
- Project coordination and organizational ability
- Manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Good verbal and written communications skills
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; a degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or other related fields
- Advanced level mathematical, statistical, and actuarial methods
- P&C Ratemaking and/or Reserving experience.
- Generalized Linear Modeling experience.
- Strong candidates without this preferred education or experience will receive serious consideration
